Top Sunscreen Myths: Busted

Ask any skin therapist, and they will tell you that a key to long-term healthy skin is using sunscreen. However, there's a lot of misinformation about this subject. Here, we debunk some of the most common sunscreen myths.

Myth: A higher SPF protects you for longer

The amount of sunscreen you apply and reapply is just as important as the SPF number. The SPF won't provide its labeled protection unless you apply the recommended amount throughout the day. We recommend using 2 finger lengths (½ teaspoon) for your face and neck and 1 shot glass full (3 tablespoons) for your whole body. Reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming, sweating, or being outside in high UV exposure. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97%, and SPF 50 blocks 98%.

Myth: All types of sunscreen protect against all sun rays

Sunscreen does not protect you from both UVA and UVB rays unless it's labeled as Broad Spectrum. SPF only measures protection from UVB rays. Make sure your sunscreen is labeled Broad Spectrum to ensure full coverage.

Myth: Darker skin tones don't need sunscreen or need less

All skin tones need protection from the sun. A 2016 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that while melanoma is more common in white patients, nonwhite patients have lower survival rates. This is due to various factors, including medical misinformation. All skin tones benefit from daily sunscreen use to prevent skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging. Annual skin checks and healthcare equity are also crucial.

Myth: Makeup with SPF is sufficient protection for the day

Even if all your makeup products contain SPF, they won't provide adequate sun protection. These products often do not offer Broad Spectrum protection, and the amount applied is usually insufficient. Apply sunscreen in the morning, followed by makeup. An SPF blush or setting spray can be used for reapplication, but don't rely on it as your primary sun protection.

Myth: I’m hardly outside, so I don't need to use sunscreen

Even if you spend most of your time indoors, you can still be exposed to UVA rays through windows and other sources. These rays contribute to skin cancer and damage. Incorporating sunscreen into your morning routine is one of the best things you can do for long-term skin health

Myth: I only need sunscreen in the summer because winter sun isn't as strong

The strength of the sun's rays that burn and age your skin depends on the UV Index, not the temperature. The UV Index ranges from 0 (low) to 11 (extremely high) and is determined by factors like ozone layer strength and cloud cover. Sun protection is essential even on cloudy and cold days.

Myth: I have to go outside without sunscreen to get vitamin D

You can get adequate vitamin D from your diet and about 5-10 minutes in the sun daily while wearing sunscreen. The Skin Cancer Foundation confirms that everyday sunscreen use does not lead to vitamin D insufficiency. If your vitamin D levels are low, consult your doctor about supplements, but continue using sunscreen.

Myth: There isn’t a sunscreen that won’t clog my pores

If your sunscreen causes breakouts, it might not be compatible with your skin type. Opt for a physical sunscreen or one formulated for acne-prone skin. Sensitive skin types should also use a physical blocker. Discuss suitable sunscreens with your skincare professional.

Myth: It's too late to start using sunscreen if I've already done damage as a kid

It's never too late to start good habits. Wearing sunscreen every day is beneficial at any age. Using products with retinol and other reparative ingredients can help soothe past damage. Start protecting your skin now for better long-term health.
