What is a HydraFacial and how does it work?

With more people embracing the natural look and being praised by celebrities, the HydraFacial has become a significant trend in skincare. It's estimated that one HydraFacial is performed globally every 15 minutes. Commonly offered by dermatologists and spas, this skin treatment addresses various concerns, including acne, dryness, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. Let's explore the HydraFacial and its benefits to help you decide if it's right for you.

What is a HydraFacial?

The HydraFacial, also known as HydraDermabrasion, is similar to microdermabrasion as it exfoliates the skin. However, while microdermabrasion uses aluminum oxide crystals, the HydraFacial is a multi-step process that combines chemical exfoliants with deep hydration. It offers more dramatic results than a regular facial and is gentle enough to be performed one to two weeks after more invasive procedures like chemical peels or laser treatments. The HydraFacial effectively removes dead skin and soothes and hydrates the skin.

Benefits of a HydraFacial

The HydraFacial provides comprehensive skin care, including cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and hydration. It uses a process called Vortex-Fusion® to deliver antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid into the skin. The treatment removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while simultaneously infusing the skin with hydrating and moisturizing serums. It is soothing, refreshing, non-irritating, non-invasive, non-surgical, and delivers immediate results.

How does a HydraFacial work?

Performed by a licensed esthetician, a HydraFacial is a three-step process using a mechanized wand with interchangeable tips for each step:

  1. Deep Clean and Peel – The first step uses a vortex-like tip to clean out dirt and debris from deep within the pores. The skin is exfoliated with chemical exfoliants such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid.
  2. Extraction – The second step uses a tip that vacuums any remaining debris from clogged pores.
  3. Deep Hydration – The final step uses a pen-like attachment to apply a hydrating serum, typically containing hyaluronic acid and peptides, to the skin.

HydraFacial aftercare

The results of a HydraFacial are immediate. Most people will notice brighter, more radiant skin and a more even skin tone without signs of irritation, redness, or peeling. There is no downtime after a HydraFacial. While no specific aftercare is required, it's best to avoid any exfoliation or invasive procedures following the treatment.

How often should you get a HydraFacial?

The frequency of HydraFacial treatments depends on your skin's needs. Some people may benefit from a HydraFacial every two weeks, while others might find that once a month is sufficient. Your esthetician or dermatologist can recommend the best frequency for you based on your skin type and skincare goals.

How much does a HydraFacial cost?

Typically, the cost of a HydraFacial treatment ranges between 159 € and 280 € per session, depending on the type of treatment. The AFACIAL Glow to Go HydraFacial, for example, costs 155€ for a 30-minute session. Keep in mind that there are add-ons available as well, such as LED light therapy that uses red or blue light to increase collagen production or eliminate bacteria.
