Rough Facial Skin Or Keratosis Pilaris: What's Really Going On?

Rough, uneven facial skin usually comes from a thicker layer of dead skin cells, made worse by dehydration, sun exposure, or dry heating air in winter. Keratosis pilaris, the medical term for so-called chicken skin, is a separate, genetically caused keratinization disorder that mainly appears on the upper arms and thighs. It's considered harmless and isn't curable, though its appearance can be eased. If your skin shows widespread, itchy, or inflamed patches, that belongs in a doctor's hands first.

With HydraFacial and BioRePeel, we help your facial skin gently loosen dead cells and look visibly smoother. If we suspect keratosis pilaris on your body or an inflammatory skin change instead, we'll tell you honestly and point you toward the right place.

Three Steps To A Finer Skin Surface

  1. Loosen

HydraFacial and BioRePeel gently loosen dead skin cells from the surface.

  2. Smooth

The skin surface looks more even and finer afterward.

  3. Protect

Daily moisturizer and sun protection lock in the result.

Four Benefits Of Treating Rough Facial Skin

  • Finer Texture

Dead skin cells are gently loosened, leaving the surface more even.

  • More Hydration

HydraFacial also supplies moisture instead of just exfoliating it away.

  • Minimal Downtime

The treatments fit easily into your everyday routine.

  • Honestly Assessed

We distinguish facial skin from keratosis pilaris on the body and tell you what's realistically possible.

Questions About Treating Rough Facial Skin: Our Expertise For Your Skin

Is rough facial skin the same as keratosis pilaris?

Not necessarily. Keratosis pilaris mainly affects the upper arms and thighs and is its own, genetically caused keratinization disorder. Rough facial skin often has different causes, like dead skin buildup or dehydration, and usually responds better to cosmetic care.

How does professional exfoliation help with rough skin?

HydraFacial and BioRePeel loosen dead skin cells more precisely than at-home scrubs and support the skin’s moisture balance. A controlled study on the skin barrier after microdermabrasion found measurable changes to the skin surface right after treatment (Rajan & Grimes, Dermatologic Surgery, 2002). The study looked at aluminum oxide and sodium chloride microdermabrasion, not HydraFacial or BioRePeel directly, but it shows that exfoliation measurably changes the skin surface.

What are the limits of this treatment?

For actual keratosis pilaris on the body, or for deep, inflammatory skin changes, cosmetic treatments reach their limits. Current research considers keratosis pilaris incurable, and improvements in skin texture are usually temporary and need repeating.

When should I see a dermatologist instead of booking a treatment?

If your rough patches itch, weep, or spread widely, or if you suspect an inflammatory skin condition, see a dermatologist first. AFACIAL does not treat skin diseases.

What does treating rough facial skin cost in Vienna?

At AFACIAL, professional exfoliation treatments cost between €149 and €169, depending on the method. The skin analysis beforehand is free, so you know exactly which treatment you need.

How many sessions do I need to see a visible result?

The right number depends on your skin condition and your at-home routine, and is set individually after the skin analysis. Most people see initial effects after 3 to 4 sessions, spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart.
