Microneedling pen guided over the cheek - microneedling treatment in Vienna

If you follow skincare on social media, you have probably come across microneedling. This minimally invasive procedure involves inserting fine, short needles into the skin. Performed by a professional, it reduces the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles and even some stretch marks. It might sound intimidating at first, but experts agree: there’s nothing to be afraid of.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling has been shown to improve skin texture and stimulate collagen production. Needles between 0.5 and 2.5 millimetres long glide over the skin from a pen-like device, creating tiny wounds that reach the deeper layers of the skin. These controlled micro-injuries promote collagen formation, helping the skin stay firmer and thicker as we age.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling addresses many skin concerns: it minimises pores, improves skin texture and reduces the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles. It is especially recommended for:

  • enlarged pores
  • fine lines and “crepey” skin
  • mild scars from acne or burns
  • hyperpigmentation
  • stretch marks

What are the side effects of microneedling?

When done correctly, the risks are minimal. Your skin may be red and tender for a few days after the treatment, but this usually settles on its own. It’s important to see a well-trained professional to avoid complications. Infection can occur if the needle pressure is too high or if at-home devices aren’t cleaned properly.

Microneedling is well tolerated by most people, but it can irritate extremely sensitive skin. Avoid it on inflamed skin, cystic acne and active breakouts to prevent further damage.

What’s the recovery like?

Recovery after microneedling is straightforward. Your esthetician will give you aftercare instructions. The micro-wounds heal quickly, though visible results can take a few weeks. Afterwards, a serum with hyaluronic acid, growth factors or peptides is recommended, because your skin absorbs active ingredients especially well at this point. And don’t forget sunscreen.

To avoid irritation until your skin has healed:

  • no makeup on freshly treated skin
  • take a break from retinol and alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHA and BHA)
  • no swimming and no intense workouts that make you sweat heavily

Does microneedling work?

Yes, microneedling is effective when performed by a qualified professional. It usually takes a series of two to three treatments, and it is often combined with other technologies for the best results on acne scars and stretch marks.

Is microneedling safe for all skin tones?

Yes, microneedling is safe for all skin tones. Some people with darker skin worry that the procedure could cause damage, but the punctures are microscopic: they don’t cut and they don’t leave scars. Microneedling is a safe, simple and effective way to achieve beautiful skin.

Does microneedling hurt?

Most people describe microneedling as a buzzing sensation on the skin, with a little more sensitivity on the upper lip and forehead. Many leave feeling like they’ve had the best facial ever. Afterwards your skin may be red and slightly swollen, but by the evening it should be back to normal or just slightly pink, so the downtime is minimal.

How many treatments are needed?

That depends on the area being treated. A series of two to three treatments, four weeks apart, is typical. The goal: first achieve great skin, then maintain it.

How much does microneedling cost in Vienna?

At AFACIAL microneedling costs between €199 and €299 per session, depending on the treatment. Microneedling face, for example, is €199 for 50 minutes. There are also add-ons that help reduce swelling and redness after the procedure, such as a custom mask or LED light therapy: red light boosts collagen production, blue light fights bacteria. You’ll find every package in our price list.
